Restaurant template

A restaurant is loudest when it is full.

The restaurant template opens a dining room, a bar and a terrace with speakers, guest Wi-Fi and CCTV, already calculated. Start there, then set each area to the level it really runs at.

design notes, 06

Designing a restaurant: level, noise and reverberation.

Pick the level the room runs at

The template starts the dining room and the bar at 110 dB, the area card’s quick pick for a busy restaurant. The Restaurant preset suggests 88 dB over 68 dBA of background noise. The target decides how many speakers the advisor asks for and how much headroom the amplifiers need, so choose it before you place. The Full and Ambient chip then checks a packed room and a quiet afternoon, about 12 dB lower.

Noise sets the bar for speech

A full room is loud: the Restaurant preset assumes 68 dBA and the Sports bar 74 dBA. The noise floor feeds the STI score, so announcements are checked against 0.60 with the room’s own noise in the calculation.

Hard rooms ring

Glass, stone and bare tables make long reverberation; the template’s dining room starts at 0.8 s. When an area is livelier than its size warrants, the treatment advisor gives the square metres of absorption to add and the STI after treatment. Carpet, drapes and the guests count toward it.

Guests stand at the bar

The bar’s listening height is 1.7 m, a standing ear; the dining room’s is 1.2 m, seated. Each area is evaluated at its own ear height, so a speaker aimed for the diners can miss the people at the counter. A focus pin on the bar makes it the reference.

The terrace has no ceiling to help

The template’s terrace starts at 85 dB with an RT60 of 0.3 s. Take the roof off the area for open sky and the reverberation changes completely. The Outdoor patio preset suggests 88 dB with Garvan Acoustic SN120 garden speakers on economy spacing.

Cameras at the till and the door

The template places its two cameras and two access points in the dining room and terrace, its largest areas. Move a camera to the till or the entrance, draw a zone over it and set the grade it must reach: the tool marks any gap in red.

venue presets, 14

The rooms you add start from fourteen presets.

Pick a venue preset when you add an area, and it fills in the target, RT60, noise floor and spacing, then places the recommended speaker and any subwoofer. Every value stays editable.

questions

About the restaurant template.

Why does the template start the dining room at 110 dB?

It uses the area card’s Restaurant quick pick, which is set for a busy room. The Restaurant venue preset suggests 88 dB. Both are starting points: type the level your venue actually runs at.

Can it show a busy night and a quiet lunch?

Yes. The Full and Ambient chip on each area switches between the full design level and an ambient level about 12 dB lower. The speakers stay put; only the level the coverage is judged against changes.

Does it suit a sports bar or a small club?

Yes. The Sports bar preset suggests 92 dB over 74 dBA, with Nice SC3-IC8 speakers and a Nice HRSi-12 subwoofer. The Small club preset suggests 102 dB with Mag Audio STING 8-114 speakers and a Mag Audio SUB 18 subwoofer.
